Acura Auto Repair, Service & History

In 1984, Honda was in the works to create a brand new sedan that features an assortment of innovative technologies and luxury features. However, engineers quickly realized that this vehicle was different than the typical, economic Honda, and the Acura brand was born. Officially established in 1986, Acura, the luxury vehicle division of Honda, was the very first luxury car brand from Japan. The brand’s name comes from the Latin stem acu, which means “done with precision,” the goal of Honda’s new division.

According to the Acura website, the concept for the brand was developed during “secret night meetings” of Honda engineers, eager and passionate to deliver performance and high-performance vehicles. Before long, Acura had opened 60 dealerships and released their two debut models: the Legend and the Integra. In 1987, its first full year, Acura sold an impressive 109,470 cars within the United States.

In the more than 30 years since Acura began, the brand has remained committed to innovation. According to the automaker’s website, the minds behind Acura hold waigaya – spontaneous brainstorming meetings where they discuss “wild ideas” and “radical concepts.” Today, Acura makes six distinct models, including luxury sedans, SUVs, and even the NSX supercar, a fully customizable sports car. In 2018, the automaker boasted 158,934 vehicle sales in the U.S., with the MDX, Acura’s three-row SUV, and the RDX, the crossover SUV, topping the list of its most popular models. Acura’s RDX, ILX, MDX, and TLX are all made right here in the U.S.
