The story of Audi is a complex one, dating back to 1899. In many ways, Audi had multiple “beginnings,” evolving into the brand we know today. In 1899, German engineer August Horch founded the company known as Horch & Cie, and it was here that Horch assisted in building his very first automobile. Disagreements amongst the leadership of Horch & Cie drove Horch to leave, however, and he set off to start his second company in 1909. Rather than calling it “Horch,” which means “Hark” in German, Horch and his new colleagues decided to use the Latin translation: Audi.
In 1932, Audi merged with three other companies – Horch, Dampf-Kraft-Wagen, and Wanderer – to become the new Auto Union AG, Chemnitz. Audi’s iconic four-ring logo represents this union, with one ring symbolizing all four of the previously independent manufacturers. In the 1960s, Volkswagen acquired the Auto Union, relaunched the Audi brand, and ultimately introduced Audi to the United States in 1970. The rest is history.
