Part of the allure of owning a Mercedes-Benz comes from the brand’s rich history of quality and innovation. It all started in 1886 when Carl Benz introduced the Motorwagen — the first gasoline-powered vehicle. But the Motorwagen wasn’t the only member of the Benz family making headlines — Mrs. Bertha Benz became the first female driver when she drove her husband’s newest invention on a 180 km trip across Germany. The headlines that resulted from Bertha’s joyride gave the Motorwagen and the Benz & Co Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik (also known as Benz & Cie) the traction they needed to become a world-renowned success.
Carl Benz wasn’t the only German automaker who was hard at work, though. Business partners Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach also invented a combustion engine in the 1880s. Soon after the completion of said motor, Daimler and Maybach founded the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG).
Though the companies continued operating through the first world war, the Treaty of Versaille wreaked financial havoc on both German automakers, forcing DMG and Benz & Cie to join forces in order to stay afloat. The merger that followed gave birth to Daimler-Benz.
Racing enthusiast Emil Jellinek joined Daimler-Benz as head of the company’s engineering department, and the company’s car line was named after his daughter — Mercedes-Benz, which was trademarked in 1902.
More than a century has gone by, yet Mercedes-Benz remains a brand that drivers look to for reliability, value, and luxury. After a period of industrial and economic revolution in Germany, Daimler-Benz worked hard to establish a distribution network, further expanding its vehicle sales and popularity.
Daimler-Benz of North America was established in the 1950s, selling over 80% of its 300SL Gull Wing supply to American motorists! Furthermore, more Mercedes-Benz vehicles began making appearances on and off the race track — from trucks for commercial vehicle fleets to motorsports cars built for Grand Prix.
Daimler continues to diversify and innovate as a way of staying ahead of its competition. For instance, Mercedes-Benz cars were the first to be equipped with keyless entry in 1997! Additionally, the company actively pursues strategic partnerships with inventors, entrepreneurs, and startups, paving the way for new technologies beyond the auto industry.
Mercedes-Benz has come a long way since the advent of the Motorwagen, creating noteworthy models like the convertible SL63 AMG, the CL-Class Coupe, and the song-inspiring G-Class SUV, better known as the G-Wagon. Today, it’s not uncommon to see fellow Mercedes-Benz drivers on the road. What’s not to love about modern design combined with timeless luxury?
