Ever wonder how the MINI got its start? Spurred by a shortage in gasoline, designer Sir Alexis Issignosis came up with the blueprint for the first MINI — a two-door, four-cylinder passenger car built for efficiency. As the fuel shortage continued through the 1950s, the manufacturer, BMC, saw an increase in MINI sales.
In the early 1960s, car maker and auto racing legend, John Cooper, saw a business opportunity in making a motorsports version of the increasingly popular MINI. And so, the MINI Cooper and the MINI Cooper S were born. The latter went on to make a few remarkable appearances in the Monte Carlo Rally, and even raced on the silver screen in British blockbuster, The Italian Job!
Over 2 million MINI had sold around the world by 1969, and that number more than doubled by 1999 — earning the MINI the “European Car of the Century” title. During the 1990s, the MINI was held by automaker BMW, who diversified and revamped the brand to include hatchback and hardtop models as well as classic and sports versions! In 2003, shortly after unveiling BMW-initiated updates to MINI, the automaker won the 2003 North American Car of the Year Award — standing out for its infinitely customizable features.
Since then, the MINI lineup has grown to appeal to an even wider variety of interest groups, with models featuring all-wheel drive, four-doors, and convertible motoring.
Today, despite being owned by a German automaker, most MINIs are still manufactured in England — and American drivers love them! Are you one of those drivers?
